THE Vicar of Lamerton performed a christening with a bit of a difference last Sunday — in the local pub.
Young George White was christened at his home, The Blacksmith's Arms, by The Rev Greg Stanton who used a mobile marble font loaned for the occasion by the Vicar of St Stephen's Church in Launceston.
Janie White, George's mum, said: 'It was at the suggestion of the vicar and we thought "Yes, why not!"
'It was the first time he'd done ever done it — it was nice for the children too, you didn't have to worry about keeping them quiet.'
The service took place in the lounge bar of the pub in front of a roaring fire, surrounded by family and friends.
Janie said the short and more informal service suited 17-month-old George too.
'He was fine — it was good for him being at home as he's older and he didn't cry because he likes having his hair washed so it wasn't a problem with the font!' said Janie.
Rev Stanton said: 'It just seemed right. Rob and Janie have the pub and we have worked together through their marriage, baptisms and family funerals — I thought it would be nice to continue the relationship at the village pub, which is the centre of the community really.'
Rev Stanton said the majority of the 60 people who gathered for the ceremony were not church-goers and it was good to meet them.
'It's like a mission really. It really did work and I would love to do it again.
'It's the church going out into society — society has changed and basically we should not be stuck within four walls,' said Rev Stanton, who also used the mobile font for a baptism at the village school last year.
