PLYMOUTH Sound Radio presented the Dickensian Evening awards at the Bedford Hotel, Tavistock, to winning traders in the town on Monday. The event was organised by the Tavistock Chamber of Commerce with prizes donated by Plymouth Sound.

Winners of the 1998 awards are as follows: Best dressed shop window — Village Arcade; merit awards to Toddle In, Bill the Baker, Mayflower Galleries, Red Planet Records and Bateman opticians.

Best dressed shop assistants — the staff at Lawsons; merit awards to No 13 Ladies Fashions, Lake Pharmacy and the Home and Gift Store.

Linda Aniyi, station director of Plymouth Sound said: 'Plymouth Sound continues to support Dickensian Night as we really want to encourage town businesses to maintain their unique position as being the place to shop for that something different. We are delighted to contribute this year by sponsoring the awards.'

She said for the past four years she had thoroughly enjoyed judging at this special event. 'I think of it as my Christmas shopping preview night so that I can return the following day with a ready-made plan of attack!'
