An officer with Tavistock Air Cadets travelled to RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire recently to receive a certificate to mark 38 years of service in the Air Training Corps. Flt Lt John Olver received his award from Baroness Gibson of Market Rasen. John joined the cadets in 1965 at the age of 13 and progressed through the ranks to be commissioned to pilot officer direct from cadet warrant officer. John, currently the adjutant, has twice been the commanding officer at 2312 (Tavistock) Sqn, as well as officer in charge of training, shooting and stores during his service. John said: 'It was a pleasure to receive my award from Baroness Gibson. I was actually one of the youngest recipients — some staff received their certificates for more than 50 years' service. The range of activities open to a young person joining the Air Cadets today has vastly improved on those available to me when I was 13 years old. 'There have been enormous improvements in the planes and gliders, the shooting and radio equipment and the opportunities for adventure training. I remember canoeing in a wooden canoe with a plastic sheet skin which actually sank! 'Recent grants have enabled the unit to purchase modern sports kit. 'Add to this the BTEC in aviation studies and Duke of Edinburgh award scheme available at Tavistock Air Cadets and you can see how far the squadron has come.' There are some vacancies for young people aged 13 years and over at the unit. Call 612927 or 612743 for details.
