CHILDREN at Okehampton Primary have been learning about the magic of reading thanks to a visit from a successful author.

David Lawrence Jones, creator of the Bradley Baker series of books, was at the school on Monday morning to give an assembly to children about the wonders of reading.

He said: 'Okehampton Primary takes reading really seriously and you can see from the enthusiasm here this morning that a lot of the children love to read.

'While it is great to be here and inspire those children, these assemblies are also about inspiring those who don't read so much and getting them interested. That's what I love to do.

'You go to some schools and when you turn up the kids had no idea you were coming. Here, the kids are buzzing and you can see that the school has helped many of them develop a love for reading.'

During the assembly he discussed his Bradley Baker adventure series of books — the fifth book is being planned for publication next year. David came back to the school on Wednesday afternoon to hold a book signing and talk to children about his books and reading.

He also led a gifted and talented workshop, which is part of the school's Socrates Society programme.
