AS a previous resident of Tavistock and now a regular visitor to this lovely, friendly, family town, I was astonished to discover that there has been a decision made to use £5,000 of council monies to show some form of celebration with regards to the forthcoming wedding of dashing Prince William to the beautiful Kate Middleton.
I am sure that if the happy couple, if they could speak publicly, would be as astonished as I am, to think that such a grand amount, especially in today's financial climate, would be used to celebrate their wedding.
I have voted on your website and believe that at present there is a 100% vote towards not spending £5,000 of council monies at this time on this occasion.
However, there may be families, shops and other commercial ventures in and around Tavistock, who would wish to express their own individual congratulations. So why not have the traditional family street parties, just as my family and my neighbours have for the past five years. We have shared costs, prepared our own decorations and refreshments . . . I know that there are many non-professional talented people in Tavistock and surrounding ares who would offer their own personal skills to provide a wealth of creativity.
What about the local schools? I am sure this event is already in their planning so why not use this wealth of good feeling and celebrate without spending £5,000!
In this democratic world perhaps your paper could ask for sensible suggestions in how the day could or should be celebrated! Then hopefully a grand sum of £5,000 would not be wasted or even used in this way.
However, I do ask, if £5,000 is easily available at such short notice perhaps the people of Tavistock should ask how is it so easily available, why is it so available and if not used for the recorded purpose what will happen to this '£5,000' if not used as stated!?
