A REQUEST for funds towards the costs of the Drawn to the Valley group of artists has been rejected by Tavistock Town Council on the grounds that it is a commercial enterprise. In a letter to the council, co-ordinator Rita Hoile said each year the group produced a high quality colour directory and hold a ten-day open studio event to showcase their talents. Last year, more than 60 artists opened their doors to the public, and exhibitions attracted many visitors. The group feel their efforts raise awareness and contribute to the wider regeneration of the local economy. The letter stated that last year?s open studios attracted more than 4,000 visitors and over £33,000 was taken in sales and commissions. ?This year the group has grown to 110 members, many of whom will open their studios to visitors for the third year running,? wrote Ms Hoile. She said the annual running costs were approximately £10,000. So far this year they had raised £6,500 through membership fees, open studio registration, advertising and sponsorship. Cllr Ian Andrews, chair of the council?s finance and general purpose committee, expressed concern over sponsorship. Members were told a total of 14 artists out of the 110 came from the Tavistock area. ?There are 14 artists who are advertising their paintings in a commercial way. I think that?s great but I wonder if its the right use of public money. I propose that we write back and wish them every success but feel that we cannot support it,? he said. The council agreed to support a request for a donation to the West Devon Life Skills for the sum of £100 as it was non-commercial and educational. In a letter, co-ordinator Mrs Adey Hutchins stated the estimated costs for this year would be approximately £6,500. The event takes place at Okehampton Army Training Camp between September 7 and 15. A total of 28 primary schools within West Devon are participating with requests for 582 children.
