LOCAL artist Michael Sanders died tragically in a cycle accident in Canada on September 3. Multi-talented Mike, who was 64, and lived with his partner Gynneth in Calstock, touched the lives of many people. He had been a flying instructor and examiner who worked for a time at Bodmin Flying Club. He was also a trained hypnotherapist and treated many people in the Tavistock, Bere Alston and Plymouth areas. Mike was most well-known for his work as an artist, running art classes in the area including in Peter Tavy and Plymouth. He was an entertaining and popular artist and teacher, also sharing his techniques through the medium of film and books. Mike and Gynneth had been house sitting for six months in Victoria, Canada where Mike continued to paint. He was passionate about cycling and twice cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats. Mike, who went to the former Tavistock Comprehensive School before going to Plymouth College of Art and Design, leaves two sons Jonathan and James and stepson Joseph. His family said: 'We are devastated to have lost him but he loved to travel and was also passionate about cycling. 'We are comforted that he died doing something that he really loved. Mike always lived life to the full and lived his dream. Mike continued to paint during his time in Canada and was due to mount a one man art exhibition on the island of Gozo, Malta. There will be a memorial service in November when his ashes are returned from Canada.
