Devon & Exeter League
Premier Division
Okehampton Argyle 0
Witheridge 2
WITH Vernon, Cann and Steve Williams returning to the side after injury, it was hoped that Argyle would up their game enough to produce their first home league victory.
But Witheridge, who lost to Argyle at home in the first match of the season, and now a much improved side, thought otherwise.
All the early pressure came from the visitors and only good defending from Vernon, Wills and James Williams, plus some excellent goalkeeping from Neil Clift, kept the scoresheet level.
But this was all to change in the 35th minute. Witheridge won a corner on the right, and from a hard, low cross, Mathew Snell hit an unstoppable volley past a packed defence
into the net to put them deservedly ahead.
The visitors continued to dominate after the break and although Argyle defended well they could not create any good scoring chances up front.
The Witheridge keeper must have appreciated a quiet afternoon with so little work to do.
With just ten minutes to the final whistle Witheridge mounted a further attack. A good shot brought a brilliant one-handed save from Clift, but the ball ran to Paul Vanstone who rammed it past the sprawled keeper to ensure victory for the visitors.
This week Okehampton are away to Exeter Civil Service, kick-off 2.30pm. Leave all-weather pitch 1pm.
Apologies to any supporters who missed the Witheridge game because of the incorrectly advertised match against Exeter Civil Service last week.
