Bere Alston FC (pictured above) entertained a Plymouth Argyle youth side in a sporting contest played on the village Recreation Field on Saturday. Despite the home team losing 5-0 Bere Alston can certainly come out with a lot of credit from the game as the visitors, the Plymouth Argyle U18 team, included no less than five professionals. John Simpson, Bere Alston FC?s president who arranged the games against the young Pilgrims, told the Times: ?We were delighted that Argyle came and the game was played in a very sporting manner, with much credit to both sides. After the game both teams enjoyed a lovely supper in the Victoria Social Club and Argyle later told me how much they enjoyed the day.? John, who is also the administrator for the Referees Academy Devon FA, said that although Argyle went up 3-0 by half-time the game was closer than the score suggested and Bere Alston players fought hard to the end. Before the game the players were presented to Ian Leonard, the chairman of West Devon FA and Bev Slaughter, the chairman of Bere Ferrers Parish Council. The game was officiated by referee Ian Leonard and assisted by Sam Littlefair from Plymouth and Curtis A?Lomair. More than 250 spectators enjoyed the game. Off the pitch there was also a fun day which included a beat the keeper competition, a golf bucket challenge, a bouncy castle, and refreshments. £200 was raised for the club, which will be put towards the changing rooms.
