South West Peninsula League division one East
Okehampton Argyle 0
Galmpton Gents 5
OKEHAMPTON fought hard against a very fast, well-drilled Galmpton side who have only lost one match all season and currently are third in the league with games in hand.
For an hour, Argyle matched their visitors, but late in the game Galmpton made their superiority show.
Galmpton had the better of the early exchanges and the match was only seven minutes old when a slick interchange of passes by the visitors' forwards allowed Shane Shobrooke a clear shot at goal. Argyle keeper Saul Scarry parried the shot but it fell to Lorin Newcombe who made no mistake with the rebound.
Argyle's midfield worked really hard to get the home side back into the game and for the remainder of the first half, there was little to chose between the two sides. Stuart Entwhistle went close from a corner for Argyle and the visitors missed some good chances at the other end but there was no further scoring before the break.
Argyle started the second half in a determined mood and hard working midfielders Chris Hollands, Ed Squire, George Pitts and Stuart Entwhistle began to cause problems for the Galmpton defence.
Sadly all Argyle's endeavour was wiped out in the 62nd minute when a long hopeful high ball into the box from Galmpton's Richard Ridley was misjudged by Scarry and he was only able to push the ball into his own net, a rare mistake for the home keeper.
Argyle made three quick attacking substitutions in an attempt to save the match but Galmpton now had their tales up and scored three more goals through Jordan Hopkins (77 and 80 minutes) and Shane Shobrooke (85 minutes).
Galmpton are a good side and may go on to win this league so all credit to Argyle for the fighting spirit they displayed – for a long period it looked possible that they might snatch a point.
