Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East

Axminster Town 1

Okehampton Argyle 3

ARGYLE deservedly took all three points from higher placed Axminster with a hard working and skilful display on Easter Monday.

Argyle looked the better of the sides early on and although the Tigers enjoyed more possession in the first 20 minutes, it was Argyle who produced the better chances and looked more dangerous. On 23 minutes, the visitors took the lead when Kel Fofala's long deep corner from the left was volleyed across the Axminster goal by Darren Prouse and Frankie Nomah-Koneh turned the ball into an empty net at the far post.

Argyle now began to dominate the game and it was no surprise ten minutes later when they increased their lead. Darren Prouse made ground on the right and fired in a low cross, which Nomah-Koneh blasted home from 15 yards. The rest of the first half was one way traffic as Argyle made a whole series of chances that they frittered away.

As so often happens, the half time break revitalised the home side and Argyle began to look jittery. Six minutes in, a clumsy tackle in the box by Argyle defender Dan Johnston saw a penalty awarded to Axminster, which was duly dispatched giving Harry Geering in the Argyle goal no chance.

To their credit, Okehampton settled to create and miss chances in front of the home goal. A strong appeal for a penalty was waived away by the referee when Steve Williams appeared to be hauled down from behind in the box and then with only 10 minutes left, the home side were awarded a penalty when a corner struck an Argyle defender on the hand.

However, Harry Geering brought off a superb penalty save. Relief turned to despair for Argyle as the linesman ruled that Geering had moved before the kick was taken and the ball was re-spotted, but the Argyle keeper was up to the challenge and pushed away the retaken penalty and then made another fantastic save from the follow-up shot. Okehampton then came back at the Tigers again and won a free kick just inside the Axminster half with five minutes remaining. Up stepped substitute Jonjo Fellows to blast home a 40 yard free kick which caught the home goalkeeper off his line.

Argyle were not yet finished and two minutes later a lovely crossfield move saw substitute Ed Squire burst into the Tigers box and fired a tremendous shot against the home crossbar.

This was a good performance from all of the Argyle squad. Harry Geering deserves great credit for his tremendous penalty saves which preserved the Argyle lead at a vital time, and other notable efforts were from Matt Mortimer in defence and Darren Prouse and Frankie Nomah-Koneh up front.

OKEHAMPTON Argyle's Carlsberg South West Peninsula League local derby against Crediton United on Good Friday fell victim to the torrential rain in the preceding few days, which had left the pitch waterlogged.

This match will now be played at Simmons Park on Tuesday, April 20 at 6.30pm.

There was no change at the bottom of the Division One East table as Ottery St Mary and Bickleigh, the two teams below Argyle, also had their matches postponed.

The Reserves' match away to Exeter side St Martins Reserves was also postponed but the Argyle thirds match at Amory Argyle in Tiverton was able to go ahead. Unfortunately, Argyle lost 5-2.

The thirds after two successive promotions are finding the standard in their new division a tough one.

They have been competitive in all their matches, but so far have achieved only one league victory and lay one off the bottom. However, several players from their successful teams of the past two seasons have moved through to the seconds and first and the third team has been a good proving ground for young players.
