THE Anchorage Centre in Tavistock has launched a desperate appeal for volunteers to help sort clothes in its charity shop.

Peta Humphries of Tavistock Area Support Services says the organisation is reliant on the charity shop to keep it going.

But recently the shop has had to start refusing second-hand items because at present they have just one volunteer to sort, clean, iron and price the large number of donated items.

Mrs Humphries said volunteers could devote however much time they had available to helping out.

?People can come along for maybe a couple of hours a week, that would be really useful to us,? she said.

The charity shop is in Barley Market Street, but Mrs Humphries says the sorting itself will be done at the Anchorage Centre on Plymouth Road.

The Anchorage Centre, next to the bus station, is a social centre where those over 55 can come along for a chat and to get involved in activities.

Anyone interested in helping out should drop into the centre or telephone on 01822 616958.

l Mrs Humphries wanted to send out a massive thank you to the children and staff of three Tavistock schools who collected harvest festival produce to be distributed to elderly people in the town.

She said Kelly College Junior School, Tavistock Primary and St Peters School had made a ?very nice gesture? and lots of older people had said how pleased they were to receive their parcels.
