POLICE in Tavistock are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted and left unconscious last week.

The woman, who was in her twenties, was returning to her home in Monksmead from walking her dog at around 6.30pm last Monday (January 21). She was approaching her back door when she was hit on the back of the head by a single blow. She was hit with an object hard enough so that she lost consciousness and fell to the ground.

Officers have been carrying out house to house enquiries and are appealing to anyone who may have seen the incident or who was in the area before 6.40pm to get in contact.

Sgt Dave Anning, from Tavistock Police Station, said: 'Someone may have spoken to other people about this incident — if you have heard anything at all, please come forward as we need to catch this person.'

The house was not entered and it appears the assailant fled immediately.
