AN appeal has been launched to find more volunteers to take books around the wards at Okehampton Hospital to provide some restorative reading material for the sick and injured. Jim Barker, who has been running the library at the hospital for a number of years, first for the Red Cross and lately for St John Ambulance, depends on volunteers to spend around an hour going around the wards once a week. Mr Barker says he needs two more helpers at the moment ? he has asked the Volunteer Bureau, but is waiting for a response. He said: ?Only one volunteer comes from Okehampton at the moment. The others, including myself, come from Gidleigh and Chagford. ?I could get by with one, but two would be ideal.? Anyone who would like to volunteer or would just like to know more about what is involved, can contact Mr Barker on 01647 231418.
