VASES of any shape, size or material are on the mind of a Tavistock landlord who this week launched an appeal to help cheer up patients at Derriford Hospital.

The idea of collecting unwanted vases came to Francis Jasper of the Union Inn after visiting his mother in hospital.

'I took her some flowers but couldn't find a vase to put them in,' said Francis. 'It is a problem throughout the hospital, not just in my mother's ward.

'Obviously, vases get broken or disappear. Some are simply the wrong size and visitors find they have to take their flowers home. I could only find a stupid little thing that wouldn't hold my flowers.'

Francis is hoping people will drop their unwanted items into the pub and he will then wrap them, pack them and take them down to Plymouth.

'This is something I can do for the hospital and I am hoping there are lots of unwanted vases out there,' he said.
