The work is by William Payne, a pioneer of English watercolour painting, who was born in 1760. Payne, who lived in Plymouth, was renowned for his picturesque landscapes and coastal scenes.
His study of Meavy shows the village?s church and famous ancient oak as they were at the end of the 18th century. It is one of two paintings of his that will be on view at the Bedford Hotel, Tavistock from tomorrow (Friday) until Monday.
They are part of 70 original oils and watercolours on view in the Elford Fine Art Exhibition at the hotel.
The exhibition and sale feature many other familiar South West scenes by a number of our most collectable artists. Charles Edward Brittan Jnr who loved to paint around his home at Sheepstor is represented with views of Leather Tor and the moors near Dousand.
The exhibition also features original works by many other distinguished artists including Dame Laura Knight.
The exhibition is open Good Friday from midday to 8pm and continues Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
