THE annual presentation of awards ceremony for the 2006 Wilson Plymouth and District League Tennis competitions took place at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth on September 19 with some 135 people in attendance. David Williams, secretary to the league and MC for the evening, reported another successful season. There had been a heavy programme of matches with 42 men?s teams and 29 ladies for the adults with a high standard of play and results with close margins. The Devonshire club was outstanding winning many trophies. By popular request as a new feature, consideration was being given to a mixed doubles competition next year; details to be announced. He expressed thanks to all those who had worked so hard to make the league such a success and that the league was indebted to its sponsors, Wilson Sports, Tony Pryce Sports and Plymouth and South West Co-operative Society. Peter Sherlock, secretary to the league, for juniors, reported another good year with 21 teams participating and thanked all the helpers without whom the league would not be possible. Association chairman Steve Hitch thanked all concerned for their efforts, in particular, David Williams, Peter Sherlock and Mary Bayliss, association secretary. In appreciation of good sportsmanship during the season two new awards were presented for teams who were not successful on court: Whiteford Rd men Divn 2 and Ivybridge Divn 5. The Curtis Cup for services to tennis was won by Sue Stones for her dedicated work over many years in support of the Hill Lane Tennis Club. Recent friendly matches - Tavistock Club. At home v Chagford lost 2-9. Home v Yelverton won 6-4. Away v Moretonhampstead lost 4-6. Away v Chagford lost 2-6.
