THE first solo exhibition by Kelly College?s artist in residence Sam White is on show in the art department. The show is called ?Ceramics within Nature? and Sam says he has obtained much inspiration from megalithic standing stones. These symbols of past sculptures coupled with the landscape and natural environment have been a great source for artistic creativity. Sam said: ?Since starting my sculptural ceramics residency at Kelly College my work has developed and is now incorporating rusty metal elements combined with sculptural ceramic monolithic forms.? Alongside this he is continuing with his site-specific ceramic sculptures ?within the naturally inspiring grounds of Kelly College?. This creative process has resulted in the Leat Arch sculpture which was inspired by the grounds in general and leat in particular. This was designed to complement the surroundings and be something to share with the Kelly College community. Sam started work on welding the framework at an evening course at Plymouth College of Art and Design and back at Kelly he worked out an innovative way of forming the ceramic archways and later combining them seamlessly on the metal framework before installing the piece into the leat. Sam has exhibited within Devon and Cornwall and currently has pieces of his work on exhibition at ?Drawn to the Valley? at the Wharf, Tavistock, the Art in the Garden Sculpture trail at Mount Edgcumbe House and at the Art Mill, Stoke, Plymouth. His work at the Kelly College art department is on view between 10am and 5pm until Sunday September 25.
