OKEHAMPTON was alive with seasonal spirit last Thursday when Edwardian Evening brought plenty of colour and song to town.
Although a heavy shower hit the town around 8.30pm there was much to enjoy for everyone.
Organised by Okehampton and District Chamber of Trade, with many of its members suitably attired in Edwardian costume, there was plenty to entertain.
Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band led the Christmas carols in Red Lion Yard, while the Barber Shop singers, the Cogs and Wheels Morris Dancers and others entertained the shoppers.
No Edwardian Evening would be complete in Okehampton without the traditional hog roast at Martins the Butchers in Fore Street and shoppers also enjoyed the stalls, the sound of the barrel organ and a glass of mulled wine served up by members of the the town's twinning association.
Of course, there was an appearance by Father Christmas himself —despite his busy schedule.
The streets themselves were lit up thanks to an excellent Christmas light display supported by Okehampton Town Council, Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council, Waitrose and the generous donations from the public and many of the town's charitable organisations.
One of the popular attractions with the children was the old fire engine which was stationed for the evening in Fore Street.
Ian Bailey, chamber chairman, thanked members and all those involved in the evening to make it an occasion to remember.
He especially thanked Don Rooke, who virtually organised the event single-handedly, and Steve Bolt for the huge task of erecting and dismantling the safety barriers.
Mr Bailey said: 'Despite the shower I was walking around and everyone seemed busy. I feel this is a special event, especially in these times when we need to encourage people to spend locally. We proved that Okehampton is as good as anywhere to shop.
'Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and that's what it's all about.'
The chamber awarded a bottle of champagne to David Elson as the best dressed shopper and presented a shield to Adrian Jennings Antiques for the best dressed shopkeeper.
