IN the Alpaca tent at Devon County Show, Sampford Spiney farmers John and Rosalind Pugh saw success with two of their animals winning rosettes on Thursday. Sampford Manor alpaca, nine and a half month old Alfie, won first in the junior class, and alpaca Charlie won fourth in the multicolour male class. Mr Pugh said he had arrived at the show at 7am on the Thursday and had to ensure the alpacas' fleece was in top condition. 'We had the alpacas in all day the day before to keep them dry, as it is easier for the judges to see the quality of their fleece,' he said. 'Alpacas are farmed for their fleece so the judging gives 60 percent of the mark on the quality of the fleece, 35 percent on the body conformation and five percent on presentation. Alfie got a first for the crimping of his fur and the fineness. It was quite a big class so we are very pleased to have won.' Mr and Mrs Pugh were showing seven alpacas in total during the three-day show, and Alfie's brother was due to be shown on Friday. The couple have 45 alpacas altogether on the farm with the newest addition of a little boy born last weekend.
