AFTER last week's disappointment in the match against Tiverton in the Palairet, Allen Deakin, Okehampton Golf Club captain, took his revenge against them when they were drawn to play each other again, this time at Tiverton in the Mail on Sunday. The result was a superb win for the Okehampton side to take them into the next round. It has been a busy week for the ladies of Okehampton with their spring open which this year was a Texas Scramble. Many clubs were represented and the format seemed to be very popular. The winning all visitors' team were from Tavistock. Dawn Phillott, Barbara Porter and Pattie Congo had an excellent net 59. The overall winners from Roserrow and Okehampton, with a net 54.4 were Zeena Pring, Maureen Willcocks and Maureen Howe. In second place from Exminster and Okehampton with 55.4 net were Amanda Windsor, Kay King and Kath Mansell. Third from Fingle Glen and Okehampton with 58.2 net were Molly Hutchins, Mary Keir and Lynn Hazelton; fourth with 58.8 were Sam Bowery, Mo Huggins and Lorna Rolfe, RND and Okehampton and fifth with net 60 Bridget Lyons, Catherine Crocker and Jackie Aitkin from Saunton. All spot prizes were won by visiting players: Jill Hill nearest the pin on the 7th from Tavistock, Bobby Viner from Exeter won nearest the pin on the 12th, the longest drive for the silver players was Catherine Crocker from Saunton and the longest drive for bronze was Pat Taylor also Tavistock. On Friday the President's Trophy team went to Libbaton; Penny Deakin had a fighting halved match. Marcia Jones had a spectacular 7-6 win, though Mo Huggins, Lynn Hazelton and Lin Atkinson lost, Pam Jarman and Kay King both won, Pam 2-1 and Kay on the 18th. So it was another halved away match, making a very steady start for the 2008 campaign. The men played a qualifying medal on Saturday. It was a close competition with the first three in division one having the same net score so was decided on countback. Stuart Tolley was first with gross 74 net 65. Martin O'Connor was second gross 72 net 65 and third was Del Owen gross 71 net 65. Division two was won by Nick Godfrey gross 75 net 61. Second and third were the same net 62 and were also decided on the back 9, Eddie Moriarty was second with Dave Harwood third. Martin Lang won division three net 61, Mike Booth was second net 64 decided on countback from Graham Harding, who also had a net 64. After a slow start to the East Devon League campaign, Okehampton juniors lost 4-2 away at Honiton with Adam Clark and Will Searle having good victories. On Sunday May 4 the junior team won at home to East Devon 4-2, Adam Clark, Dan Curtis and Ollie Kirby winning, Lawrence Waldron and Jordan Lee halving their matches.
