MARY Tavy residents and visitors from further afield are invited to the village's bonfire night this Sunday (November 2).

The free event will start at 5pm and has become somewhat of a tradition in the village, being popular with locals of all ages.

This year there are due to be more activities, especially for children, with luminous balloons, a giant glowing noughts and crosses game and other games which will show up in the dark.

The event will take place mainly around the recreation ground but some activities will take place in the Coronation Hall where the 'Guys' will be lined up for judging.

Anyone can enter a Guy — be it an individual or family — and it doesn't need to represent Guy Fawkes himself. Previous Guys have included a highwayman and a tiger!

The Guys will be added to the giant bonfire and the way down to the bonfire will be lit by carved pumpkins, which are also welcome from anyone and will attract prizes for the best.

Visitors are invited to come in fancy dress, for which there will be a prize for the best children's costume.

There will be toffee apples, bonfire sweets, hot soup, a hog roast, a licensed bar, a raffle, music and a firework display.

The cost of the fireworks as well as other costs of the event are covered by sponsorship and donations from The Pool Guy in Mary Tavy, SJP Motors in Tavistock, Terry's Zimmers in Okehampton and others.

If the weather is awful and the event has to be postponed, it will take place a week later, but the organisers — the Mary Tavy Jubilee Group and the trustees of the Recreation Ground — are keeping their fingers crossed for fine weather this year.
