Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s visit to Tavistock on Tuesday is the big news of the week, but there’s been plenty going on in Tavistock — here are the big stories in this week’s Tavistock Times.

• Hundreds of people filled the centre of Tavistock to catch a glimpse of the Tavistock Community Festival of Food and Crafts’ guests of honour the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall on Tuesday.

• A childcare setting in Gunnislake has closed its doors following an Ofsted inspection which deemed it ‘inadequate’.

• A planning application to reinstate the roof of a ‘neglected’ Grade II Listed barn situated at the birthplace of Tavistock’s most famous resident Sir Francis Drake has been granted by West Devon Borough Council.

• The Britain in Bloom judges have been out and about in Tavistock and Bere Alston judging all the lovely floral displays.

• Inspired by the bond between a homeless person and their dog, staff from a Tavistock veterinary practice held a sponsored ‘sleep out’ last Wednesday.

• Tavistock Carnival Week got off to a great start last weekend with the baby show, fun day in The Meadows including the crowning of the carnival princess and the presentation of prizes to the peace poster competition winners.

• Seven pages of local sport including Tavistock Swimming Club’s James Lake being named Devon coach of the year.
