Tavistock 2nd XI 1
United Services 3rd XI 1
TAVISTOCK Seconds hockey team entertained US to a brisk friendly which resulted in a fair result.
The Tavistock full backs were told to push up and make their tackles nearer the halfway line and to rely on the half backs to get back and make the second tackle deeper into the Tavistock half. This worked well but left the team vulnerable on the breakaway.
Greenaway, playing in the unaccustomed position of goalkeeper, made some fine saves to keep Tavistock in the game.
In the attack, Jones and Newman Jnr played well with Newman taking up some super positions and unlucky not to score.
At half-time the skipper continued his policy of playing team members out of position with a view to finding their true potential and moved Wills from right back, where he has played for years, to left half and Knox to right back, a position new to him.
This created new vistas for the whole team who promptly let in a goal!
Things settled however, and Cheffey scored the equaliser.
Thus closes the first half of the season when Tavistock have played some of the best hockey for a number of years which has resulted in their being placed third in the league.
