PREPARATIONS for Okehampton?s commemoration of the historic events surrounding D-Day 60 years ago are going well, according to organisers.

Peter Williams, of the Royal British Legion, said things were ?looking good? for a day to remember in the town, which included a parade, a service in the Red Lion Yard and a tea dance on Sunday June 6.

He said: ?We?ve also decided we will have a plaque put up on the wall in Red Lion Yard, commemorating the 60th anniversary, and Brigadier Carey, the commander of 43 Wessex Brigade, has confirmed he?s coming.?

Mr Williams said although some big anniversary events were being held on the South coast, he did not believe many towns in Devon were organising substantial events like Okehampton.

He hoped as many Normandy veterans in the area as possible would be able to come along as guests of honour on the day, though he conceded that their numbers were falling with the passage of time.

?They?d have to be in their late 70s or 80s now, because they had to be 18 or 19 to fight in those days,? said Mr Williams.
