TAVISTOCK will be embracing the festive spirit for the annual Dickensian Evening tomorrow (Friday) for which a number of roads in the town will be closed to traffic.

Duke Street, Brook Street, West Street (from Rocky Hill towards the town centre), Russell Street, Pepper Street, Elbow Lane, Market Road and Market Street (from the junction of Pym Street down to West Street) will all be closed from 3.30pm, with no loading or waiting of vehicles permitted in these areas from 2pm.

This will allow time for the rides and stalls to be set up and give the opportunity for excess vehicles to be moved before the town gets busy.

The roads will be open again at around 10pm.

This evening (Thursday) at 7pm, the lights will be switched on on the three large Christmas trees which were this week erected on the front of Tavistock Town Hall.

The 'Trees of Light', organised every year by the Lions Club of Tavistock, will be illuminated by many bulbs, sponsored in memory of a loved one, by people living in the area. Funds raised by the trees of light for local charities now amount to nearly £71,000 since the first Christmas tree was erected on the town hall in 1999.
