THERE are just a few days to go before Okehampton Carnival brings fun and entertainment to the town on Saturday, October 20.
Carnival day kicks off with a coffee morning in the Charter Hall from 9.30am. Everyone is invited to come down and enjoy a cup of coffee while browsing the stalls.
The Charter Hall will be full of bright and wonderful costumes from 1.30pm as the judging of the children's fancy dress takes place, alongside judging for the best dressed window competition.
This will be followed by the crowning of the carnival prince and princess, Chloe Funnell and Matthew Dell. Okehampton mayor Cllr the Rev Mike Davies will crown the pair in School Way at 3pm.
The afternoon children's procession will then leave School Way at 3.15pm, passing through Market Street, Fore Street and East Street before making its way back to School Way. Road closures will be in place from 3pm until the end of the procession.
The judging of the evening classes takes place from 6pm. The carnival queen Conniejayne Bailey will be crowned by the mayor on Mill Road at 7pm.
This year's procession will be led by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. Setting off at 7.15pm, the procession runs through George Street, Fore Street, East Street, Crediton Road, Limehayes Road, and Exeter Road, leading back toward George Street.
FOOTsteps School of Dance will provide entertainment on Fore Street, with fun provided by Entertainingly Different on East Street.
Road closures will be in place on the route from 6.30pm until approximately 9.30pm.
Following the carnival there will be a funfair in Simmons Park throughout the evening. The carnival committee is keen to see as many people turn out as possible.
Organisers are keen to remind carnival-goers to donate generously to those with buckets and collecting boxes. The carnival costs around £1,800 a year to run, and without donations it cannot go ahead.
If you are keen to get in the carnival spirit early, you can give your brain a workout at the carnival quiz night in the White Hart Hotel tonight (Thursday).
Teams of four will battle it out to win first prize. Entry costs £6 per team, with the quiz kicking off at 7.30pm. To book a table call Elaine on 07861 370432.
