TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club men?s section?s run of good fortune in the Farley Trophy came to an abrupt end when they lost four and drew the fifth of the five disciplines which made up the match against Mount Gould on a neutral green at Tothill.
Tavistock player Clive Jago, playing in the four-wood singles, had the misfortune to face Mount Gould player Paul Bailey, who had, just prior to the game starting, been informed by a selector that he had been chosen to represent England in their next under 25s? international match.
Paul proceeded to celebrate by beating Clive 21-6, despite Clive playing a good game and delivering some well placed woods.
Tavistock?s only success was achieved by skip Mike Allen and his team of Pat Sykes and Tony Coombs, who drew the triples discipline 14-14.
Earlier in the week, Tavistock men had faced Unity Park league team and emerged 91-68 winners, thanks to winning on three of the four rinks played.
Skip Eric Stevens and his squad of Clive Jago, Norman Paramor and an in-form Ernie Piper, won 33-11, while skip Malcolm Bloomer and his team of Der Saunders, John Smith and Brian Preece won 18-16.
Roy Northam steered his team of Colin Tremaine, Wallace Northey and David Perry to a 23-15 victory, but skip Mike Allen and his rink of Pat Sykes, Derek Bradford and Lionel Sims lost 17-26.
Yealmpton Bowling Club visited Tavistock for a match which ended with the home side winning three of the four rinks played, to take it 85-65.
Tavistock skip Colin Tremaine and his team of Derek Bradford, Joan Northey and Ann Brown won 21-13, while skip Eric Stevens led his team of David Perry, Hazel Lovell and Ray Moore to a 20-14 winning margin.
Skip Ron Cooper and his squad of Brian Preece, George Blackburn and Ray Meneer won 29-15, but skip John Smith and his team of Wallace Northey, Brian Ellicott and Jenny Aldridge lost 15-23.
The ladies? match against Plymouth Sir Francis Drake ladies? section on Thursday ended in a win (42-36) for Tavistock Ladies, thank to skip Yvonne Meneer and her rink winning 24-16, which was enough to compensate for the loss (18-20) on the second rink led by Marion Allen.
The friendly rink played alongside the league games resulted in a 25-14 win for Tavistock, thanks to skip Jenny Aldridge and her team.
Topsham were Friday?s visitors for a mixed match which resulted in an overwhelming 153-99 victory for Tavistock, who won all five rinks played.
Skip Malcolm Bloomer and his team of Ron Cooper, Wallace Northey and David Perry won 23-22, while skip Betty Browse led her squad of Norman Paramor, Joan Solly and Clifford Hicks to a 30-11 victory.
Yvonne Meneer led her team of Ray Meneer, Patricia Hoar and Brian Preece to a 23-15 win, while Stuart Doidge and his squad of John Smith, Joan Northey and Dorice Hicks won 35-22.
Roy Northam and his team of George Blackburn, Wendy Bloomer and Ann Brown won 22-12, while skip Der Saunders achieved a 20-17 victory, thanks to his team of Walter Meek, Albert Townsend and Shirley Blackburn.
Saturday saw a coachload of players and supporters set off in brilliant sunshine for Paignton and a match which ended in a 86-93 defeat for the team, despite winning on three of the five rinks played.
Winning skips were Jean Flay (20-14), Roy Northam (17-15) and Stuart Doidge, (18-16).
