A MAN was airlifted to hospital in Derriford last Saturday, after being rescued following a fall in Lydford Gorge. Firefighters from Tavistock were assisted by the line rescue team from Camel?s Head in Plymouth during the incident, which occurred at about midday. Tavistock fire chief Tim Smith said the man, who was in his 50s, had been walking along the lower section of the gorge when he slipped and fell down into the river, knocking his head on the way down. Mr Smith said: ?He managed to get up and walked about a hundred yards, then he collapsed.? ?He had suffered neck and back injuries as well as the head injuries ? the only way to get him out safely was to totally imobilise him.? The man, who was on holiday from the Hampshire area, was taken to hospital by Devon Air Ambulance.
