A UNIVERSITY graduate from Bere Ferrers is hoping to bring multi-culturalism to West Devon, inspired by his degree work in African studies.
Adam Musgrave, 21, and his girlfriend Katrine Green (pictured left) spent two months working and travelling in Ghana as part of their degree at the University of Birmingham.
The couple are now applying to Oxfam to become On the Line millennium award winners.
Adam said: 'On the Line is a project founded by Oxfam, WWF-UK and Channel 4 which aims to inspire people to think and act globally.
'Intending to celebrate the cultures and environments along the Greenwich meridian line, it aims to create a sense of global citizenship and overcome cultural barriers.'
Adam and Katrine, who is also 21, aim to return to Ghana and Burkina Faso in the New Year, collecting field research for multi-disciplinary projects which will be taught in primary and secondary schools in the Tavistock area.
Adam said they hope to overcome the common misconception that Africa is one homogenous region with one people, one culture and one environment.
The couple hope to teach youngsters about the 'rich diversity' of the vast continent.
Adam said response by schools has been 'overwhelmingly positive'.
'Teachers have agreed that our project will bring benefit to children in the Tavistock area, who often lack a multi-cultural dimension in their lives and consequently, may be unprepared for a future outside the South West,' he said.
He hopes long-term sustainable links between schools in West Africa and Devon will be established, whether by e-mail, penfriendships or even pupil exchanges.
