OKEHAMPTON branch of the Royal British Legion will gather at the RBL Social Club in Station Road next month for the annual meeting.

The Royal British Legion continues to be very active in Okehampton, whose close association with the Armed Forces, particularly the Army and Royal Marines, goes back many decades.

The branch has been especially successful in recent years, promoting the legion?s work for the benefit of ex-servicemen and women and their dependants.

The meeting takes place on Monday, November 22, from 7.30pm.

Despite decreasing membership, the legion continues to offer valuable support to millions each year.

For instance, approximately £250,000 of the Poppy Appeal Fund is spent annually on welfare cases in Devon alone. These include not only purely welfare assistance but also practical help such as vocational work training, remembrance travel and careers advice for ex-service personnel and those about to leave the Armed Forces.

Anyone is eligible to become a member of the legion; previous service in the Armed Forces is not necessary.

Membership application forms are available at the club bar open on weekends and most evenings.

The Okehampton branch is in dire need of younger blood to safeguard its future. Consequently, members, both associate and ordinary, are urged to make every effort to attend the annual meeting.

Names of members wishing to be nominated for election to the branch committee should be entered on the list posted on the club notice board by Monday, November 8.

Likewise, any item for inclusion in the agenda should be notified to the secretary by the same date.
