THE Tamar Valley Jazz Association is currently giving a platform to perhaps lesser known musicians, and had an extremely successful evening in March at the Ordulph Arms, Tavistock, when a very supportive audience turned out to hear the Renata d?Aiello quintet.
This month TVJA presents the Gary Kavanagh Quartet from London, which brings together some very fine musicians who create melodious acoustic jazz, blending fresh creativity with respect for the be-bop lineage.
Gary, leader and trumpet player, played for many years in Holland, and was well established on the Dutch jazz scene. Since then his playing has broadened and matured and he plays with a good combination of fluidity, emotion and harmonic ideas, his influences being Clifford Brown, Art Farmer and Fats Navarro.
Regarded as one of the foremost jazz guitarists in the UK, the quartet features Dave Cliff, who, in the mid 70s toured with Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh.
The group is completed by Nik Preston, who is one of the up-and-coming double bass players on the scene and Ron Parry, a well established drummer who over the years has worked with many world class musicians.
The gig takes place on Friday June 20 at the Ordulph Arms, Tavistock.
