OKEHAMPTON Acoustic Club celebrates its first anniversary with its monthly meeting on Saturday, February 9.

The club has hosted more than 40 bands and solo performers in its first year, many  playing their own original material, with styles ranging from folk to jazz and rhythm and blues.

Phil Bird, who founded the club with Anna Georghiou, said: 'Each month has brought fresh and  exciting acoustic music line ups from both the local area, and from as far away as Plymouth, Oxford, Swanage and Hastings.

'A growing audience of between 40 and 50 music lovers have given their support to the venture each month.

'Anna and I would like to say a big thank you to all the musicians who have come to play here, to Robin Brindley who manages the door and a special thank you to our wonderful audience for creating such a warm friendly atmosphere in this acoustic music venue with an eclectic spirit.'

This month's meeting welcomes Rosa Rebecka, an acclaimed singer and songwriter from Sweden, who has Swedish love ballads and joyous polkas among her varied repertoire.

The Diamond Family Archive will bring their spectral folk sound to the evening, and local folk singers Trevor and Chrissie have teamed up to perform a medley of songs both old and new.

Troubadour's Garden, the duo of club founders Phil Bird and Anna Georghiou will also perform.

Doors to the event at the Ockment Centre open at 7.30pm, with entry costing £2.50. People are welcome to bring their own refreshments.
