WHAT a joy it is to visit the Crowndale Recycling Centre these days. No longer a trough of mud, the tips running into each other in a dangerous muddle — now it is tidy, well organised and the clean tarmac shines in the rain.

Well done, the new contractors, and full marks to West Devon Council for selecting them. No longer a 'tip', I look forward to showing it to my American visitors.

Just one snag — some cracks are beginning to appear in the tarmac — any of that Portuguese granite left over from Bedford Square?
