A TASTE of fine Devon food will be on offer at events being held across West Devon in October to mark Devon Celebration of Food Week.

A series of events are being held between October 4 and 12, to promote the very best of local produce and cuisine.

Among the West Devon events taking place is a whole day of activities devoted to the apple at Westlake Farm, Beaworthy, on Sunday, October 5.

The apple extravaganza will feature demonstration pressings at both commercial and DIY level. The Westlake Press Gang will be pressing their award-winning Cox and Bramley on the hydraulic press and orchard experts will be giving tips on apple-growing.

Cooking demonstrations and tastings of apple juice and cider will be on offer throughout the afternoon.

The young are also being encouraged to get involved in Devon County Council?s Celebration of Food Week. St Andrew?s Primary School, Buckland Monachorum, is holding apple day celebrations on Saturday, October 11. The event will celebrate the versatility of the Bramley Apple and there will be apple pie competitions, craft stands and apple juice-making demonstrations on display.

Another aspect of the week will be a set lunch and dinner menu at the Dartmoor Inn at Lydford, featuring Devon apples and cider, plus a special Countryman?s Cider Supper, with good quality seasonal ingredients.

In Okehampton, a traditional food market will be held in the Charter Hall on Saturday, October 4, where students from Okehampton College will be taking part in a cooking competition using food produced locally.

Dartmoor Happy Hogs from Whiddon Down will be holding a ?Bountiful Barbecue? in Okehampton?s Red Lion Yard, on the same day, cooking up sizzling sausages and brilliant burgers, between 11am and 3pm.

The Plume of Feathers in Okehampton is again offering a ?Big Breakfast? between 8am and 10.30am on Tuesday, October 7, making use of the best ingredients from the West Devon area.

Last but not least, a cheese tasting is being held at award-winning Country Cheeses in Tavistock, on Friday, October 10. To find out more about the Celebration of Food events visit the website ?
