A GOLDEN sun shone on Bere Ferrers as the 67th spring show was held.

Standards were high, a bonus considering the very late season; numbers were slightly down on 2014 entries due to the weather.

A balmy day was enjoyed by villagers and visitors alike. Rare and exotic specimens bloomed alongside the famous narcissi of the Tamar Valley. Together with lovely cottage garden plants they were the very essence of spring.

The decorative section was well supported, the theme being 'Waterloo', so imaginative entries included the battle, Abba and the station.

There were dainty pots of daffodils — a new class for 2015 — a display of historical classes attracted much attention and the garden produce section was overflowing with succulent specimens.

The domestic section showed that country folk really can bottle and bake. The photographic competition was admired and discussed; a unique event occurred — five people shared the trophy!

With homemade refreshments, cut flowers, a plant stall and raffle, there was much to interest everyone.

This year an art and craft fair was held in conjunction with the show to promote the talented artisans of the area. On display were unique handmade articles, ideal as presents, made in the Bere Peninsula.

They included fleeces, felting, willow basket ware, stoneware pottery, glass blowing, quilting, cards, lace making, wood turning, delicious cupcakes, with face painting to disguise the children.

Margaret Willmott, chair, announced the introduction of a new much needed loop system in St Andrew's Church for which sincere thanks for the fundraising goes to Brian Lamb, chairman of Bere Ferrers Parish Council.

She thanked all her committee, all the entrants, sponsors and support shown to the spring show, known as the 'best in the west'.

Sincere thanks went to the judges: Section one John Lanyon; section 2 and 3 G Bennett; decorative and children's Mrs Iris Snell; domestic Mrs Marion Lethbridge and Mrs Spry; section 6, photography, G Leech.

The trophies and prizes were presented by well-known local author Cllr Ted Sherrell. He comes from farming stock, was brought up in the Tamar Valley, so understands the importance of the community to local life: 'This delightful show being a prime example' — his wish, 'long may it remain, warmest congratulations to all'.
