TWO nonagenarians from Lydford were treated to a birthday party to remember last week when the village turned out to mark their special occasion. Lionel Gloyn, born March 13 1917, and Bill Cooke, born February 28 1917, were joined by 70 villagers in the Nicholls Hall for the birthday bash, along with more than 30 children from Lydford Primary School. Both Lionel and Bill were born in the village and spent all their lives there — apart from when Bill fought in world war two. Lionel farmed locally and Bill worked at Dartmoor Inn. The pair both went to the school in the village, and still have lunch with the pupils once a week. The children dropped in to sing 'happy birthday' to the oldest living members of their school. Villagers enjoyed a traditional roast lunch and two birthday cakes. Party organiser Sue Holland said the pair and the villagers had 'a really good time and a lovely afternoon'.
