EXBOURNE?S first community market and big breakfast event on Saturday exceeded expectations with many visitors coming to sample the best of local produce. Despite the unseasonable weather, sales of local produce were high at the event, organised by Exbourne and Jacobstowe Community Association. Fifteen stalls offered a tempting array of locally produced goods, including cheese, bread, meat, jam, honey, dairy produce, pottery and traditional baskets. Other stalls run by local residents included Fairtrade goods, handmade cards and cakes. One enterprising local teenager, Charlotte Kearley, raised money for the trip she is planning to southern Brazil next year. Exbourne?s local produce co-ordinator, Claire Hariades, said: ?Nearly £1,000 worth of produce was traded during the morning and that?s money that will directly benefit the local economy. ?We are all aware that local produce is a hot topic nationally at the moment but we were staggered at the success of this event . ?The support and interest from the local community has been fantastic.? More than 70 cooked breakfasts made from local ingredients were served up at the event, and Hatherleigh town crier Ros Chard kindly officiated at the grand prize raffle draw and produce auction to close the morning.
