AS USUAL, Mr Cox (Letters August 10) and his party stand confused on Europe. His party has been playing 'hedge your bets' for 30 years. They have spent 30 years throwing trust away and have a shameful roll of dishonour:
The Treaty of Rome including the clause 'leading ever closer to economical and political union'. (They didn't tell the people too much about that.)
Mrs Thatcher's Single European Act.
The Maastricht Treaty. The opt-out clauses, all of which were nullified by other legislation.
Not only has his party forfeited our trust, we cannot trust the other signatories to the treaties, so why bother? Why re-negotiate the Fishing Treaty when the other signatories ignore the provisions of the existing Treaty. (You can buy baby cod in restaurants in Spain).
The Nice Treaty is not 'disturbing'. It is the final execution of our democracy without even a jury trial or the protection of our ancient rights. Will Mr Cox's party still have a referendum if it is signed before/if they become a government? The only way is to opt out. Keep our democracy and our judiciary.
Protect our fishing fleets with sole fishing rights in our territorial waters.
Leave our farmers free to produce as much milk as they wish and stop subsidised imports.
The only wasted vote is a non-vote. Let everyone vote; then we will see a real sea change and get real people not professional politicians. So vote for UKIP, a party that is doing what the people want not what it thinks the people ought to want.
