SOWN, grown, harvested and served up on a plate . . .

School dinners have come along way from soggy semolina and they don't get much fresher or tastier than the ones being dished up at Okehampton Primary School.

Last week children at the primary school were able to taste the first crop of potatoes grown on the schools new allotments.

The potatoes were beautifully roasted and served with pork, crackling, roast parsnips, broccoli and home made gravy.

Headteacher Brian Cunningham was full of praise for both the children's work on the allotments and the skills of the school's dinner ladies.

He said: 'As a keen gardener myself, it's fantastic we can offer the opportunity to children so they too can get the enjoyment of sowing, growing and harvesting.

'It's made even better by the fact they can eat their own food which they've grown.'

The allotments, under the supervision of Fran Rickwood from the primary school, are all set to move from strength to strength.

The primary school now have volunteers working with them to make the allotment even better for the coming years.

Work is already underway to prepare them for next spring.
