THREE generations of a family gathered at Whitchurch Village Hall to celebrate Ernest Bigwood's 95th birthday.
Born in Scotland to Salvation Army missionary parents, Ernest settled in Tavistock more than 30 years ago.
At five years old, Ernest and his parents moved to Japan, where they lived for seven years and managed to survive the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake.
Ernest then moved to Kenya in 1927, where he lived for almost 40 years.
An avid amateur painter, Ernest has not let age hold him back as he recently hosted an exhibition in his own home of his favourite paintings and sketches.
Grandson Jono Jackson said: 'As a man of such esteem, there are few in the town who have met him and have not been inspired, touched and warmed by his charm, character and charisma.'
Ernest was surrounded by family and friends to welcome in his 96th year in high spirits.
