THREE staff and seven cadets from 2312 (Tavistock) and 2443 (Okehampton) Squadrons of the Royal Air Force Cadets completed their summer camp at RAF High Wycombe recently.
The local cadets joined 27 other cadets from Plymouth and Cornwall to take part in a varied programme of activities.
A high ropes course was particularly challenging, requiring initiative and physical strength to complete it. The station fire section gave the cadets hands-on experience in dealing with different type of fires. The cadets ended up soaking wet, which was welcome in the hot weather.
They spent a day at RAF Brize Norton where they were able to talk to staff who fly the Tristar and Hercules aircraft. The temperature in the cockpit of the Hercules was only half that experienced in Afghanistan.
A day at RAF Benson gave an insight into the work of the Puma and Merlin helicopters. Touring the aircraft kept everyone interested and asking questions.
Recreation time was spent bowling, playing sport and included a visit to a local farm that supplies ice cream to Buckingham Palace for Royal garden parties.
Tavistock cadets were pleased to meet up with Wing Commander Alec Ostler, the station medical officer. Alec was a cadet at their squadron 20 years ago and assisted the Station Warrant Officer in judging the drill competition.
Sqn Ldr John Olver, officer in charge of the camp, said: 'It was an interesting week that challenged everyone taking part. The ice cream went down particularly well in the hot weather. We also met up with four ex-cadets from Plymouth who are now officers in the RAF.'
Both squadrons welcome new recruits who must be at least 13 years of age and are also seeking adult staff. Call 01822 612743 for details of Tavistock Squadron and for Okehampton 01837 55044 on a Monday between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.
