SANDHILL House in Gunnislake opened its gates and welcomed many visitors to view its garden over the weekend, to raise money for St Luke's Hospice. The garden attracted many people on Sunday, a vast majority of whom had lived in Gunnislake most of their lives, but had never had the opportunity to visit Sandhill House, which is regarded as one of the secret treasures of the Tamar Valley. Sandhill House was formerly owned by John Williams until his death in 1841. At one point, Mr Williams owned 33% of the tin mines in Cornwall, including Gunnislake mines. The property is now owned by Mary Corin who runs a bed and breakfast business there. This is the second time the garden has been open for St Luke's Hospice. The Calstock Rubber Band provided entertainment during the afternoon. The garden will be open again for the hospice as part of the Gunnislake Walkabout, when several gardens in the village will be open on July 13. There will also be a Calstock Walkabout on May 25. l Pictured in front of the water feature in Sandhill House gardens are Wayne Marshall, community fundraiser for St Luke's, Wayne's son William and Sandhill House owner Mary Corin.
