PET owners in the Okehampton area can once again book a free health check for their pet with a local vet. Following the overwhelming success of last year?s PDSA National PetCheck Week, Okehampton and district pet owners can take advantage of the free offer between September 26 and October 2. In 2004, almost 46 per cent of pets checked during PDSA National PetCheck Week had one or more health problems, which is why the charity is keen to encourage even more pet owners to take advantage of the free health checks. This year, PDSA hopes to reach even more people and their pets, with free pet health checks available at the charity?s 42 PDSA PetAid hospitals, four PDSA PetAid branches, PDSA PetAid practices and hundreds of private veterinary practices across the UK, including Okeford Veterinary Centre. ?Many pet owners don?t think about finding a vet until there is an emergency or their pet is ill or injured,? says Elaine Pendlebury, PDSA senior veterinary surgeon. ?By booking in for a free pet health check, owners can have a relaxed visit to their local veterinary practice and meet the staff, without the associated worry and stress when visiting with a sick or injured pet in an emergency situation.? As well as free health checks, pet owners will be able to seek advice on routine health issues, including diet, exercise, grooming and dental care. Okehampton?s Okeford Veterinary Centre practice manager Peter Hardy said: ?PDSA National PetCheck Week provides an opportunity to learn more about what is involved in keeping pets fit, healthy and happy. If pets are not registered with a practice, booking an appointment for a free ?PetCheck? is a great way to start.? Free checks are available from Okeford Veterinary Centre in School Way, telephone 01837 52148.
