WHILE waiting to find out who Tavistock men's hockey team will be facing in the play-offs, with the favourites looking to be Taunton CS, they played the first of the post-league season friendlies.
With a few players resting Tavistock fielded a team, with the assistance of Fiona Dunn and Judy Smallacombe. Any thoughts that the students would hold off from the physical approach were dashed when within the first two minutes Smallacombe was upended by the visitors' keeper.
Tavistock managed to contain the students for long periods but every so often the visitors broke through the home midfield but squandered any scoring chance.
With the game flowing from end to end and benefiting from some of the best umpiring all season, Tavistocks' slick passing and networking style began to create chances.
The second half continued at the same pace with opportunites at both ends. Stand-in keeper Jefferys made some fine reaction saves but worried the Tavistock defence with a couple of indications of commencing a run up the pitch with the ball!
This was a good workout for Tavistock and thanks go to the ladies for their support but the 1st XI need to start preparing for one of the most important games in recent years.
