IT was standing room only for 'Carols for the Community', hosted by the Salvation Army in Tavistock Town Hall on Sunday, December 9.

We enjoyed many carols, Christmas music from the local Salvation Army band and friends, the singing group, timbrels and scripture readings. The crowd was enchanted by the choir from Whitchurch Primary School, under the directorship of Mrs Karen Higginson. Their singing was energetic and 'full of beans', featuring a number of soloists, all of a very high standard.

An impromptu Nativity was presented by Majors Dawn McGarvey and Linda Purdey using the children of the choir and others in the congregation. Dressed in Nativity costumes the children paraded through the hall with great effect.

The mayor of Tavistock presented a cheque for £415 to Mrs June Wildman for the Memory Café, which provides social contact and help for those with dementia and their carers. Unfortunately, our local MP, Mr Geoffrey Cox, was unable to attend due to illness striking at the last minute.

Following the carols, refreshments were provided, giving an opportunity to mix with the guests.

Our thanks to the staff of the town hall who, as always, were most helpful and supportive and also to those who attended and were so generous in their giving, which means so much to the Memory Café.
