A FUNDRAISING day to update Tavistock Meadows' play park proved a great success on Bank Holiday Monday — despite the heavy rain. Visitors flocked to the second Meadows Makeover fun day, held to raise funds towards renovating the park. Undaunted by the weather, people turned up in their hundreds to the town hall and Bedford Square, with the town mayor Cllr Harry Smith opening the event before parents and children filled the hall to listen to Anna and Elsa (Sarah Ackroyd and Bethany Hulme-Teague) singing songs from the Disney Film Frozen. Meadows Makeover co-founder Mia Holman said: 'Parents and children sang along with the girls, who did a fantastic job. They stayed for the whole day either singing on stage or sitting for photographs, taken by professional photographer Neil Adams, who gave up his bank holiday to help.' Outside on the square bands played on through the rain and spectators could enjoy a beer or burger under a gazebo, courtesy of the Lions, or Mexican food cooked by Sabor de Mexico. Bands and musicians included Tei Daratsa, Still Filthy, Jayson John, 3s A CroWd, Ten Zero One and State of Contradiction. Barry Lowton of A Shot in the Dark provided the sound and managed the outdoor stage, supported by friend Phil Morgan. Acts in the hall included Brit Spirit and the Tavistock Twirlers, while the crowd also enjoyed hair demonstrations by the Hair Lounge, and Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper gave a story telling session of their book 'Hedgehugs' along with a colouring competition. They also donated ten signed copies of their popular book. Meadows Makeover co-founder Keri Pierce said: 'Local businesses and individuals were amazing in their support for the event. The raffle included 106 prizes, largely donated by local shops and attractions. 'The Hair Lounge took donations, all of which went to the Meadows Makeover, while providing free hair styling. Ursula Mann and Rachel Davis provided glitter tattoos, with Ursula donating the £100 profits she made to the fund, and Judy Lowton of Facelicious did Frozen-themed face painting. Local people helped on the stalls as well as the makeover team and it really felt like a community event.' The Meadows Makeover team estimated that the day raised £3,000, which will go towards funding a zip wire for the new park. This is the most affordable part of the renovation and its purchase will be used to show national funding bodies that there is community support for the project. The Meadows Makeover team still needs support and the next event to be held will be a disco pool party at Meadowlands on Saturday, September 13 from 4pm to 5pm. All the takings will go to the Meadows Makeover fund and tickets are available from Meadowlands.
