IT was a ?rare bit? fun in Hatherleigh on New Year?s Day as the Hatherleigh Walruses jumped into the icy waters of the River Lew dressed in Wallace and Grommet-themed costumes. Around 35 hardy souls braved the cold temperatures to take the dip into the river at the bridge. Before the dip at 3pm, the Walruses presented a short show called ?Walrus and Grommet?s Weird Bunny? to entertain the sizable crowd who had come along to watch. Claire Gladstone, who was among those taking part said: ?It was very cold and there was a lot of splashing, so everyone got thoroughly wet, but it is really good fun.? Claire was dipping for the third time, but said there were also a number of people taking the plunge for the first time. The event raises money for charity, this year the good causes being supported are the Hatherleigh Silver Band training band and a children?s play area at the town?s new multi-million pound community centre.
