MARVELLOUS music will be played during September as the Stannary Brass Band of Tavistock celebrates ten successful years. The band, formed in 1995, has gone from strength to strength, starting as a small group of brass players and quickly developing into the band it is today, boasting more than 80 members who play in the beginners? section, training band, youth band or main band. The group includes players of all standards and ages with everyone enjoying musical success. Many members who start as youngsters in the band move through to make music their career; gaining music degrees, becoming composers and continuing to play with other bands and orchestras. The band has now become a large part of Tavistock?s history, representing the town on twinning visits to Pontivy in France and Wesseling in Germany, as well as playing at Tavistock?s Remembrance Day parade and leading the carnival. Christmas is also a busy time with many concerts, including the popular Christmas charity concert, where the band plays alongside an invited choir or musical group, raising money for charity. The band is certainly not shy of performing, and when there are no scheduled concerts they can regularly be heard playing in the Meadows bandstand or in Bedford Square, and always to an enthralled audience. The Stannary Brass Band is currently raising money to provide new instruments for the main band, and so far, through concerts, donations and grants have successfully raised an impressive £40,000. The band is highly recognised in the area, having Edward Woodward as its first patron before the honour moved on to Angela Rippon who said, about the birthday celebrations: ?Congratulations to the band ? a decade of making fine music and supporting the local charities. ?They?re a great team, and I?m really proud to be associated with them. Here?s to the next decade and beyond!? Youngsters are always invited to join the band, with instruments provided at no cost, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy music. The band has expressed thanks to everyone who has been a member, watched performances or made donations over the past ten years. The anniversary will be celebrated with a special concert on Saturday, September 17, in Tavistock Town Hall, with tickets available from Fulfords Estate Agents at a cost of £5.
