TOP quality floats, large crowds and hot sunshine made for a wonderful finale to Tavistock Carnival Week on Saturday. ?The best parade for a long time? was how Tavistock Lions press officer Steve Grummitt described the procession which brought colour and spectacle to the streets of Tavistock. Floats and walkers in rainbow colours interpreted the theme ?Peoples of The World? and after a hard task, judges chose Tavistock Community Primary School as the winners with their ?What a Wonderful World? creation. ?The atmosphere was brilliant and it was a really hot day so was ideal for people watching the carnival,? said Mr Grummitt. ?Everyone enjoyed themselves and we are grateful to all our supporters and sponsors particularly George Wimpey who was the main sponsor for the week.? Residents of Downs Road were praised for their patience and hospitality as the road was blocked off for the procession. Some even offered toilet facilities for the travelling princesses. The collection on the procession route, which took 27 people 3 hours to count, was £3046, just down from last year?s record. The collection consisted of 93,628 coins made up of 46,865-1p, 33,483-2p, 7510-5p, 2654-10p, 2105-20p, 475-50p, 513-£1, 34-£2 plus £ 25 in notes! The profits will be distributed amongst the charity groups, clubs and schools that participated in the procession, together with the local branches of Lupus, Riding for the Disabled, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, MenCap, British Heart Foundation and Tavistock Area Support Group The winners of Best in Procession and Carnival Theme each receive a trophy and a cash prize. In a week of downpours and blazing sunshine, only one event had to be cancelled ? the parish bowls competition ? but from the baby show ? which attracted a record 49 entries ? to the fun day in The Meadows, the flower and craft show to the pavement artists competition, organisers deemed the week a great success. The Pavement Artists competition also attracted the highest number to date at 53 including Jonathon Hansen from Montana, USA who was on holiday at the time with his grandparents in Bere Alston.
